Seaside Rock - Lifton Holiday Club 2010
Oh I do like to be beside the seaside!!
A wonderful time was had by over thirty children at the fourth, successive Holiday Club run by Lifton Methodist Church from 2-6 August 2010.
This year’s club was set by the seaside and featured the stories of Peter, the Rock. It was run by a lifeboat crew of over twenty adult helpers from churches in Lifton and the surrounding area, led by Revd Cathy Arscott.
The action-packed week featured a variety of fun "seaside" activities, action songs, craft workshops and energetic outdoor games. The church was transformed into a beach, complete with sand, rockpools, boats and a beach cafe. A special guest appearance was made every day by Lifton's own meteorological maestro, "Heather the Weather", who bore an uncanny resemblance to Mr Frank Arscott!
The children made a fantastic undersea collage, seaside models and imaginative crafts, as well as colourful paintings. They took part in story-telling and drama about Peter's life and times with Jesus. All the children entered hand-crafted birthday cards in the Lifton Horticultural Show and were delighted to be amongst the winners. Mrs Valerie Kneebone came along to present the prizes, including a cup for the Children's class winning entries.
On the last day, parents, grandparents and friends were invited to a celebratory closing ceremony, at which the VIP guest was Capt David Gynn, a steward of the church. Dressed in full ceremonial uniform, Capt Gynn joined the children to view their activities and present medals and special sticks of rock, reminding us of "Jesus the Rock".
Just like Peter (or Rocky to his friends) we learnt about building our lives on the firm foundation of God’s love, and this was celebrated at a special service at the church on Sunday 8 August, led by Revd Cathy Arscott and the children.
The Seaside Rock will feature in a joint "Saturday Batterday" Holiday Club event at Central Methodist Church, Launceston on Saturday 18 September from 12.00 - 4.00 pm. All children aged 5-11 welcome, free of charge, but bring a packed lunch. Tea provided (with parents) at 3.30pm.
